From ongoing pandemic issues to social media "challenges," school security concerns continue to rise. Join the discussion as we address the most current topics, including school culture, active shooter drills, innovative products, and the appropriate involvement of students. Expect lots of interaction as we show remarkable photos taken at schools and tackle trendy, if not controversial, solutions. The presenters will draw upon diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise. Attendees will also benefit from helpful resource websites.       

Learning Objectives

Upon completion:

  • Attendees will be made aware of, and able to implement, school-specific strategies for furnishing a safe learning environment.
  • Attendees will be able to educate school stakeholders in the relative merits and pitfalls associated with today's solutions, including systems, products, and technology.

Mark Berger is the President of Securitech Group, Inc., a manufacturer of innovative door locking solutions, including the "Red Button Lock" series for fast and safe classroom lockdowns. He has served as Chair of ASIS International's School Safety & Security Community and is the former membership chair of the Physical Security Community. Other volunteer activities include Past President of DHI Door Safety & Security Professionals and is the longtime chair of the Builder Hardware Manufacturers Association's Codes, Government & Industry Affairs committee, as well as a board member of that organization. He authors a monthly column entitled "Real Openings" educating about life safety in the built environment. He co-authored the "PASS Recommendations for Appropriate Drills: Why They Are Essential to Every School Safety Program".

Paul Timm, Vice President of Facility Engineering Associates, is a board-certified Physical Security Professional (PSP) and the author of "School Security: How to Build and Strengthen a School Safety Program." He was named one of the Most Influential People in Security in 2020 by Security Magazine. In addition to conducting numerous vulnerability assessments and his frequent keynote addresses, Paul is an experienced School Crisis Assistance Team volunteer through the National Organization for Victims Assistance (NOVA). He serves on the Campus Safety Conferences Advisory Board, the Advisory Council for the Partner Alliance for Safer Schools, the ASIS International School Safety and Security Community, and the Illinois Association of School Business Officials Risk Management Committee.

Kevin Wren is a Regional Sales Manager at A3 Communications, Inc. Prior to joining A3 Communications, Inc., Kevin was in school safety and technology industry for over 20 years creating security and emergency management departments for two of South Carolina's largest school districts. Kevin is a steering committee director for the Partner Alliance for Safer Schools, an advisor for Safe and Sound Schools, a member of the ASIS School Safety and Security Community, and a previous K-12 Director of the Year for Campus Safety Magazine.
