Security strategies often translate into an iron fist or velvet glove approach; a philosophical dichotomy that is growing every year. You either lose the notion of customer service or you sacrifice efficacy.
We chose to merge security concepts with hospitality to bring a new (and more holistic) security policy. This was applied in several Ghent municipal museums (Belgium). The Ghent museums are frontrunners on security and art crime prevention, but in a country with a high-risk appetite concerning these topics. Accessibility, convenience, and enjoyment for the public remain top priorities.
We will show through three tactics how we seek to instill responsibility, collaboration, and situational awareness in our museum visitors. We’ll talk about nudging, empowerment, and shared worth.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- weigh the relationship between hospitality and security with understanding and respect for both perspectives;
- assess the impact of hospitality and security on the tasks of the different profiles employed in museums;
- apply the techniques discussed in their own environment and in line with their own objectives.
