Should long-standing retail brands close certain stores due to spikes in store-level crime?  Should their security posture or technology change?  For the last several years, retail security leaders have cited concerns about rising crime and its increasing brazenness—from grocery theft during the early pandemic, to smash-and-grab, to follow-home targeting, to more recent “bank jugging.” In recent months, the problem has gained public traction—executives are speaking to the press, and boardrooms are beginning to address. This session will cover both the data and narrative themes related to retail crime and the evolution of AP/LP and other security responses. The format will be a mix of “lecture” and open discussion.  Chatham house rules will apply.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand rising crime trends of the last two years and their impact on retail businesses.
  2. Assess the current state of retail security, and examine the use of technology in understanding risk, information-sharing and response.
  3. Understand recent improvements in best practices, including the importance of public/private sector security coordination; cross-domain information sharing; and internal change management.
