Mental health affects all aspects of our lives – at home and at work. We are all on the mental health spectrum and every day life events impact that balance.  From everyday stressors to more serious mental health conditions, the security profession is not immune to the challenges it can present.  Self-awareness, vulnerability and overcoming stigma are critical to caring for your mental health and the people you love. Embracing self-care can lead to a better you and has the potential for you to help others in your personal lives as well as partner with HR, Benefits and Operations at work to build or improve your company mental health initiatives. This contribution can positively impact your security culture including psychological safety, potential hostile work environments and other benefits that contribute to business growth and enhancing your value and trust with leadership relationships.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  1. The power of vulnerability.  The presenters will share their mental health journey that will model fearless vulnerability to overcome the main barrier to self-care.
  2. Mental health impacts everyone.  Everyone has (or will) experienced a mental health situation in their lives, either directly or indirectly (someone they know or love).
  3. Mental health as part of company culture.  Understand how companies prioritize mental health – stigma busting, mental health resources (Employee Assistance Programs), etc.
  4. How to embrace mental health into your security culture.  Security’s non-traditional opportunity to contribute to employee mental wellness.
  5. Empathy, compassion, understanding and action.  Enhancing these characteristics to make you’re a trusted business partner.

John Rodriguez

John Rodriguez is the founder of Empathic Security Cultures LLC based in Austin, TX.

John brings 40+ years of pure corporate security experience working for major corporations including General Motors, Kimberly-Clark, Levi Strauss & Co., and Cardinal Health. He previously was the CSO for Temple-Inland in Austin, TX.  He also owned a consulting firm for 10 years with over 100 Fortune 500® clients.   John’s career started as a third shift proprietary security officer with General Motors progressing to positions of higher responsibility up to CSO.

John is a Certified Family Support Group Facilitator with the National Alliance on Mental Health and gives back to the community by leading support group discussions as well as training at law enforcement academies as part of their Crisis Intervention Team curriculum in the Greater Austin, TX area. 

While with Kimberly-Clark Corporation, security director for Latin American operations, the company was ranked #1 of 1,900 companies from 2009-2011 by the Great Place to Work Institute® John’s innovative security strategies were recognized by senior leadership as critical contributions to those years of #1 rankings.  Business sales ranked 1st or 2nd place in every country of operation.

John’s is a security generalist with passion for security culture development, mentoring, and mental health in the workplace to reduce workplace violence, bullying, and hostile environment risks. He also works with business leader and employees to break through the mental health stigma barrier to work towards self-care.

He holds a Master’s of Liberal Arts, Texas Christian University and a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice, North Texas State University. He completed the Chief Security Officer Executive Development Program, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.  He held the ASIS CPP certification for 19 years and the ACFE CFE designation for 16 years.  He has lectured numerous times at ASIS, ISMA and other security associations. 

He has authored articles including:  How to Build a Best-in-Class Security Culture for ASIS International – this was 1 of the 12 most read articles in 2022.

Mike Hurst, CPP, CPOI

Mike has worked in security/fire since 1988.  Through Business Development, General Management and since 1992 executive security recruitment / consultancy with HJA Consult specialising in mid to senior level appointments.

As Director of the International Foundation for Protection Officers (IFPO) in the UK and Ireland Mike has, with the support an Advisory Board championed education and career pathway opportunities for frontline security officers, highlighting Mental Health and Wellbeing challenges.  IFPO UK & I has developed a range of accredited eLearning programs.

He has spoken at GSX, ASIS Europe and numerous conferences in the UK and Internationally on subjects such as recruitment, personal branding and career development but recently has been focusing on mental health and wellbeing topics.  In 2022 he, with support from ASIS HQ, set up the Mental Health and Wellbeing Working Group on ASIS Connects.

He holds the ASIS CPP and IFPO CPOI Certifications.
