This event will present the ASIS member survey on mental health including self-care, overcoming stigma barriers, and what companies are providing for their workforces. Discussion will include insights on partnering with HR, Benefits and Operations to make mental health an innovative positive aspect of your security culture.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  1. Review various updated mental health topics peer security professionals are experiencing regarding mental health self-care
  2. Learn information from studies on financial impact/benefits for companies to invest in mental health
  3. Innovation: Moving from traditional security core services to embracing holistic care of your workforce.

Speakers*

Dr. Kennette Thigpen Harris

Dr. Kennette Thigpen Harris, affectionately known as Dr K is a well-known and highly respected woman of stature. In the speaking business, she is one who empowers and brings undeniable engagement. As a person, she is resilient with a story that literally impacts the minds of all. As an International Psychologist and Licensed Clinical Social Worker, with over 15+ years of experience, she is a trusted and sought-after professional who utilizes her skills and background to help companies around the globe create atmospheres that promote positive mental well-being. She has learned that there is no “cookie cutter” approach, but there are failproof solutions that can lead to a more resilient, productive, and engaged workforce. Dr. K’s innovative methodology has awarded her the Top 100 Health Care Visionaries by The International Forum on Advancement in Healthcare and The IChange Nations Award for Women Who Add Value. She has been featured in Forbes, Authority and Medium Magazine, just to name a few. Dr. K has helped some notable organizations such as The Wall Street Journal, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and The Dow Jones infuse mental health into their organizations. 

John Rodriguez - Founder of Empathic Security Cultures LLC 

John brings 41+ years of pure corporate security experience working for major corporations including General Motors, Kimberly-Clark, Levi Strauss & Co., and Cardinal Health. He previously was the Chief Security Officer for Temple-Inland in Austin, TX.  He also owned a consulting firm for 10 years with over 100 Fortune 500® clients from 1995-2004.   John’s career started in 1982 as a third shift proprietary security officer with General Motors progressing to positions of higher responsibility up to CSO. He has also worked in Latin America and the Caribbean for 33 years.

While with Kimberly-Clark Corporation, security director for Latin American Operations, the company was ranked #1 of 1,900 companies from 2009-2011 by the Great Place to Work Institute® John’s innovative security strategies were recognized by senior leadership as critical contributions to those years of #1 rankings.  Business sales ranked 1st or 2nd place in every country of operation.

John’s a security generalist with passion for security culture development, mentoring, and mental health for a psychologically safe workplace and mitigating hostile environment risks.  He also developed the Security Culture Professional’s Attributes Model (SCPA Model) for their human connection and security culture journey.

He holds a Master’s of Liberal Arts, Texas Christian University and a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice, North Texas State University. He also completed the Chief Security Officer Executive Development Program, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. 

He has lectured for the largest security association - ASIS International, the U.S. State Dept. Overseas Advisory Council (OSAC), the International Security Management Association (ISMA), Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP) as well as other groups. 

John is a Certified Family Support Group Facilitator with NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Health and gives back to the community by leading support group discussions as well as training at law enforcement academies as part of their Crisis Intervention Team curriculum in the Greater Austin, TX area.  

John recently earned his facilitator certificate from the Center for Building a Culture of Empathy, and as a student of psychology, social psychology, and neuroscience, he is currently participating in a 6-month Certification in the Foundations of NeuroLeadership program with the NeuroLeadership Institute.

Mike Hurst CPP® CPOI

Mike has worked in security/fire since 1988, through Business Development, General Management and since 1992 executive security recruitment / consultancy with HJA Consult specialising in mid to senior level appointments.

A former joint Vice Chair / Chair of the ASIS UK Chapter (the largest outside of North America)  for over 10 years, he also served / is serving on the European Advisory Council, The Extremism and political Instability Steering Committee Group, The ESRM Community and the Awards Committee.

He has spoken at GSX, ASIS Europe and numerous conferences in the UK and Internationally on subjects such as recruitment, personal branding and career development but recently has been focusing on mental health and wellbeing topics.  In 2022 he, established the ASIS International Mental Health and Wellbeing Working Group on ASIS Connects. 

He is European Regional Director of the International Foundation for Protection Officers (IFPO).
